Baby Shower from Lea Smye

Baby Reveal Cake

Lea Smye

I was given the honour of being asked to make a baby shower reveal cake and after much (super fun!) research decided upon this design. My most favourite part was seeing my friend’s face when she got to see the final cake.

Materials

  • Vanilla cake tinted pink or blue
  • Pre-prepped vanilla buttercream for inside and outside
  • Fondant for covering decorations (make black fondant for black letters; other letters cut from white and hand-painted with gold & silver gel)
  • Gold wire for hanging star
  • Gel colours (black, gold & silver)
  • fondant letter cutters (Tappits)
  • Star and heart cutters
  • Paint brushes
  • Cornstarch
  • Serrated knife or cake wire
  • Fondant roller
  • Off set spatula
  • Bench scaper

How to make it

Step 1: Bake (at least) two cake layers. These were 9 ". Once completely cooled, wrap and chill at least overnight (or freeze). Fresh cakes are a pain to decorate!

Step 2: In the meantime, get your fondant decorations/lettering underway so you have time to let them dry...
Cut out your fondant letters using your chosen font and let air dry for added stability.
Paint gold & silver; cut out letters from black fondant (hand mixed from white + black gel) - while all drying, do the same with the hearts & stars. One star needs a small hole for the wire as it will be the "hanging star".

Step 3: When you have the decorations ready, it's time to cover your cake...
Torte (cut in 1/2) each layer to create 4 layers and fill each with buttercream. this serves to not only increase the height of the finished cake but allows for extra, yummy buttercreaminess!

Step 4: Crumb coat the outside (apply a thin layer of buttercream to seal in crumbs) and chill for about 15 minutes.
Cover with your buttercream and make smooth using offset & bench scraper.
Chill frosted cake, then...

Step 5: Place your waiting letters on top and sides (side letters need have the backs brushed with a touch of water to help affix to the chilled buttercream) then add heart & star shapes.
Last step is to insert the hanging star!
