A canvas tote always reminds me of days at the beach and lounging by the blue ocean. I thought this would be a great opportunity to try a “shibori style” dye technique; a seaside inspired indigo blue beach tote. This technique is a bit of a cheat, by using a bottle dye kit, that creates less of a mess and quick results!
Materials
- Canvas Tote
- Indigo Dye - I used Tulip (powder you mix in application bottle)
- Large Plastic bag to cover surface
- Small plastic bag to wrap
- Plastic Gloves
- Elastic Bands
How to make it
Step 1: Wash Tote if necessary - or soak in water

Step 2: Fold tote in half.
Fold again, accordion style, until you have long rectangle

Step 3: Fold into triangles, accordion style.

Step 4: Secure 3 corners of triangle loosely with elastics.

Step 5: Place triangle pouch on large plastic for protection and add indigo dye.

Step 6: When dye covers both sides of triangle pouch wrap in small plastic bag. Wait 6 -8 hours or according to package instructions. Wash separately in washing machine, according to dye package instructions.

Step 7: Let dry and enjoy. Add yarn tassels for a hit of colour!
