While body scrubs are a great way to treat yourself, they often contain less than lovely ingredients. This simple sugar scrub is all natural (even edible!), has a bright and fresh scent, and will leave your skin glowing.
- 1/2 cup white sugar
- 1/2 cup coconut oil
- zest of 1 grapefruit
- 1-2 tablespoons fresh grapefruit juice
- 20-30 drops essential grapefruit oil (you can find essential oils at most natural food grocery stores).
- 1/2 teaspoon beet juice (optional for color)
How to make it
Step 1: Combine sugar and oil in the bowl of a standing mixer with paddle attachment, and mix until smooth. Of course you can do this all by hand. Just make certain you’ve mixed all the solid oil until it’s smooth.
Step 2: Add grapefruit zest and grapefruit oil. Mix on medium high until thoroughly combined.
Step 3: Stir in beet juice. (Add just a tiny bit at a time until you achieve your perfect color.)
Step 4: Coconut oil has a very low melting temperature. So after the heat rises from the stirring and mixing process, your scrub will be thinner than you might want. Don’t worry. After letting it sit at room temperature or a quick trip to the fridge, the oil will return to a more solid state.
Step 5: This scrub will keep for months if sealed tightly and kept out of the heat. The coconut oil will make the scrub more or less solid depending on where it’s stored. If you’re making this scrub as a gift (perfect for christmas when citrus fruits are everywhere), or just want to keep one batch indefinitely; you can easily leave out the grapefruit juice and substitute water. The oil will still give the scrub a fresh grapefruit scent.
